Unveiling Announced

You Are Invited To The Dedication And Unveiling Of A Headstone
In Memory Of
Andrew Payne Mazzilli.

Officiated By Rabbi Josh Derkenwald

Sunday August 24th, 2008 @ 3:00 PM
At Beth David Memorial Garden-Graveside
Oak Hill Cemetery
300 Curtner Avenue, San Jose, California 95125

For directions you may call the cemetery: 408-297-2447 or see

the google map (navigates to the google page.)

You can also call Roz Mazzilli -845-338-7272 and after August 11th on her cell phone 845-853-5774, and if you know anyone else from Andrew's community of friends please invite them to the Memorial Service. There will also be a small reception afterwards.

The unveiling is a beautiful graveside ceremony marking the setting of a loved one's headstone. By gathering to remember the passing of a loved one after the burial, the ritual serves as an important part of the mourning and healing process, establishing in the memories of those who are present the qualities of a loved one we want to recall in the lives of the living.

An unveiling is a formal dedication of a memorial. In former times family and friends may have gathered and physically installed the monument. Nowadays the memorial is installed prior to the unveiling. The stone will be veiled. Prayers are offered, words of eulogy shared and the veil is removed. The unveiling also allows the bereaved family members to honor and to recall the memory of their departed. It is a chance to continue to reflect upon the significance of that person's life, his or her accomplishments, and the people who were important. In a sense, through the unveiling, the memory of a person's life is etched permanently into the collective memory of the community.

Six Strings Down

I went to Johnny 's gig tonight at the Saloon in the City. Lots of musicians who knew Andrew played, including Johnny, Eugene, Joe, and the gentleman on bass whose name I'm forgetting (Bart, maybe?). I also got to see Mike, Liz, and a few other folks who knew and loved Andy. The band played this terribly apt song that brought tears to my eyes:

Six Strings Down
(Lyrics and music by Aaron Neville, C. Neville, E. Kalb, K. Smith, and Jimmy Vaughan, written for the late Stevie Ray Vaughan)

Alpine valley
In the middle of the night
Six strings down
On the heaven-bound flight
Got a pick, a strap, guitar on his back
Ain’t gonna cut the angels no slack

Heaven done called
Another blues-stringer back home

See the voodoo chile
Holding out his hand
I’ve been waitin’ on you brother
Welcome to the band
Good blues-stringin’
Heaven-fine singin’
Jesus, Mary and Joseph
Been lis’nin’ to your playin’

Heaven done called
Another blues-stringer back home
Lord they called
Another blues-stringer back home

Albert Collins up there
Muddy an’ Lightnin’ too
Albert King and Freddy
Playin’ the blues
T-Bone Walker, Guitar Slim
Little Son Jackson and
Frankie Lee Sims

Heaven done called
Another blues-stringer back home
Lord they called
Another blues-stringer back home

Yeah, fuck.

Endings and Beginnings

Welcome friends and family.

It is with utter disbelief and sadness that we are saying good bye to Andrew Payne Mazzilli. Andy's body was found last Wednesday night, April 18, 2007, in San Jose, California. We don't yet know the official cause of death, and won't for several weeks. The last few years were incredibly difficult for Andrew, and we only wish that he is resting peacefully now. We love you, Anj.

We are in the process of planning a memorial service as well as a celebration of his life with music and friends, and we will post information here as we know more.

Following are links to some sites online where friends have been sharing memories and photos. We will also use this space to post our thoughts, pictures, and stories about Andy. If you have anything to contribute, please feel free to leave your comments here.
